The Holiday Let Turnaround Cleaning Checklist
Holiday lets around Hull, Beverley and out towards Withernsea live or die on reviews, and a fast, thorough turnaround is at the heart of that. Here's the checklist we work to.
Why turnaround cleaning is different
A holiday let turnaround isn't the same job as a regular domestic clean. You're usually working to a tight window between checkout and check-in — often just two or three hours — and the property needs to look genuinely spotless to a stranger who has no context for how it normally looks. There's no margin for 'we'll get that next time'.
Hosts in and around Hull, from city-centre apartments to coastal cottages near Withernsea, tend to find the biggest reputational risk isn't big obvious problems but small overlooked details — a hair in the shower, a sticky worktop, bins not emptied. Guests notice these far more than hosts expect.
The checklist, room by room
Working through the property in a consistent order every time reduces the chance of missing something under time pressure. Most experienced turnaround cleaners work from the top of the property down and from the back rooms towards the exit, so nothing gets walked back over once it's clean.
- Bedrooms: strip and remake beds with fresh linen, check under beds and behind headboards for stray items, dust surfaces, vacuum including edges
- Bathrooms: full disinfect of toilet, shower/bath, sink and taps, fresh towels, replenish soap/toilet roll, mirror and glass polished streak-free
- Kitchen: check fridge and cupboards for leftover food, wipe all surfaces and appliance exteriors, run/empty dishwasher, check hob and microwave inside
- Living areas: plump cushions, fold throws, dust surfaces and electronics, vacuum or mop floors, check remote controls work
- Whole property: empty all bins, check smoke alarm isn't obstructed, top up welcome consumables, do a final walk-through with guest eyes
Timing it realistically
A one or two-bedroom flat can usually be turned around properly in around two hours by an experienced cleaner working alone, but a full house with multiple bathrooms often needs two people to hit a tight same-day slot. It's worth being honest with yourself about this when setting checkout and check-in times, because rushing a turnaround is exactly when things get missed.
If your booking platform allows same-day back-to-back turnovers, building in a buffer — even 30 minutes — gives room for the unexpected: a late checkout, a maintenance issue, or simply more mess than usual after a group stay.
The details that drive reviews
Guests very rarely mention 'the cleaning was fine' in a review — they mention specifics, and usually only when something was wrong. Limescale on taps, a smell in the bin, dust on skirting boards, or hair in the plughole are the sort of small things that can tip an otherwise good stay into a mediocre review. A short final inspection with a torch in bathrooms and under furniture catches most of these before a guest does.
Laundry and linen logistics
Having enough spare sets of towels and bedding to cover at least one full turnaround cycle takes the pressure off same-day laundry timing, which is one of the most common bottlenecks for hosts managing several properties around Hull and Beverley. It also means a set can be laundered off-site while a clean set goes straight onto the beds.
