The Ultimate End of Tenancy Cleaning Checklist

10 October 20258 min read

Everything a tenant needs to check off before handing back the keys, room by room, to give the best chance of a full deposit return.

Why end of tenancy cleaning is different

End of tenancy cleaning isn't the same as a normal weekly clean. Letting agents and landlords across Hull typically check a property against the original inventory, which means areas that don't usually get much attention — inside cupboards, behind appliances, window tracks — all need covering properly. Missing these is one of the most common reasons deposit deductions happen.

Give yourself more time than you think you'll need. A thorough end of tenancy clean on an average three-bedroom house can easily take a full day if you're doing it yourself, particularly if the property hasn't had a deep clean during the tenancy.

Kitchen

The kitchen is usually where inspections are strictest, since grease and grime build up quickly and are easy to spot.

  • Clean inside and outside the oven, hob and extractor fan/filter
  • Empty and wipe out the fridge and freezer (defrost the freezer first if needed)
  • Clean inside all cupboards and drawers, removing crumbs and marks
  • Descale the sink, taps and any kettle left behind
  • Wipe down all surfaces, tiles and splashbacks
  • Mop the floor last, including under any movable appliances

Bathroom

Limescale is the biggest issue in most Hull properties given the hard water in the region, so pay particular attention to taps, showerheads and tiles.

  • Descale taps, showerhead and shower screen or curtain rail
  • Clean the toilet thoroughly including behind and around the base
  • Remove any mould or mildew from grout and sealant
  • Wipe down mirrors, cabinets and extractor fan cover
  • Clean and dry the floor thoroughly

Bedrooms and living areas

These rooms are more straightforward but still checked closely against the inventory, especially skirting boards, carpets and walls.

  • Vacuum and, where needed, professionally clean carpets
  • Wipe down skirting boards, door frames and light switches
  • Clean inside wardrobes and drawers
  • Wash or wipe windowsills and window tracks
  • Remove any marks from walls where reasonably possible

Don't forget these easily-missed spots

A surprising number of deposit disputes come down to small details rather than major cleanliness issues. Going over these last will save you having to redo the whole job if something's flagged.

  • Light fittings and lampshades
  • Inside washing machine and tumble dryer drums and seals
  • Radiators, front and back
  • Doors, handles and switch plates
  • Any outdoor space, bins and garden if included in the tenancy

Should you do it yourself or book a professional clean?

If you're short on time, moving out of Hull to another city, or simply want the peace of mind of a receipt to show the letting agent, a professional end of tenancy clean is usually worth it against the cost of a potential deposit deduction. It also removes the guesswork about what standard is actually expected.
