Beating Limescale and Hard Water in East Yorkshire Bathrooms

A large part of Hull and the surrounding East Yorkshire villages draw water that has passed through chalk aquifers, which naturally dissolves calcium and magnesium into it. That's what we mean by 'hard water'. The practical effect is that every time water evaporates, it leaves behind a fine mineral residue. On a shower screen, tap or kettle this builds up quickly because those surfaces dry and wet again several times a day. Limescale responds to mild acid, not to elbow grease alone. Plain white vinegar, diluted lemon juice, or a shop-bought limescale remover all work on the same principle: the acid reacts with the mineral deposit and softens it so it lifts away rather than needing to be scraped off. The trick most people miss is contact time — a quick spray and instant wipe rarely does much.

For taps and shower heads, soak a cloth or paper towel in white vinegar, wrap it around the affected area, and leave it for 30–60 minutes before wiping and rinsing. For shower screens, spray liberally, let it sit for ten minutes, then use a non-scratch scourer in small circles before rinsing with clean water and drying with a microfibre cloth to avoid new marks forming straight away.

The single most effective habit is drying surfaces after use rather than letting water sit and evaporate. A squeegee on the shower screen takes fifteen seconds and prevents most of the build-up that would otherwise need a proper scrub at the weekend. It sounds small, but households that do this consistently need far less deep descaling.

Ventilation matters too. Running an extractor fan or opening a window after a shower reduces the amount of standing moisture in the room, which slows scale formation on tiles and grout as well as glass. In older Hull terraces without great ventilation, a dehumidifier or trickle vent can make a noticeable difference over a few months.

It isn't just the bathroom — kettles across East Yorkshire scale up fast, which is why descaling every four to six weeks with a proprietary descaler or a vinegar-and-water solution left to sit overnight is worth building into a routine.
