A Room-by-Room Spring Cleaning Checklist

2 March 20268 min read

Spring cleaning doesn't have to mean an entire weekend lost to chores. Break it down room by room and it's far more manageable.

Why spring cleaning is still worth doing

After a long winter of closed windows, heating on constantly, and less natural light to spot dust and grime, most homes across Hull genuinely benefit from a proper seasonal reset. It's also a good opportunity to tackle jobs that don't fit into a normal weekly clean, like sorting cupboards or washing curtains, while the lighter evenings give you more motivation and daylight to work with.

Kitchen

The kitchen tends to accumulate the most winter build-up thanks to extra cooking and baking, so it's worth starting here.

  • Clean inside the oven, hob and extractor filter
  • Defrost and clean out the freezer, checking use-by dates as you go
  • Wipe down the inside of cupboards, removing anything out of date
  • Descale the kettle and taps
  • Clean behind and underneath moveable appliances

Living room

Winter heating tends to leave dust circulating more than usual, so this room benefits from a proper going-over.

  • Vacuum and, if needed, professionally clean carpets or rugs
  • Wash or vacuum curtains and blinds
  • Dust skirting boards, picture frames and light fittings
  • Clean behind and under sofas and furniture
  • Wipe down radiators, front and back

Bedrooms

Spring is a good natural point to rotate mattresses, wash bedding thoroughly, and go through wardrobes now that heavier winter clothing can be packed away.

  • Wash duvets, pillows and mattress protectors where machine-washable
  • Vacuum the mattress and consider rotating or flipping it
  • Sort through wardrobes, storing winter items and donating what's unused
  • Dust wardrobe tops and clean skirting boards

Bathroom

Hard water across Hull means limescale builds up steadily whether you notice it week to week or not, so a spring clean is a good chance to properly tackle it.

  • Descale showerheads, taps and tiles thoroughly
  • Clean and, if needed, re-seal grout that's showing mould
  • Wash bath mats and any fabric shower curtains
  • Clean inside cabinets and check for expired toiletries

Windows and entryways

With more daylight, marks on glass and smears on doors become far more noticeable, so this is a satisfying place to finish.

  • Clean windows inside and out where accessible
  • Wash windowsills and tracks
  • Wipe down front and back doors, letterboxes and handles
  • Sweep and tidy entryways, porches and doormats

Pace yourself — or bring in help

You don't need to do all of this in one exhausting weekend. Spreading it across a couple of weekends, room by room, is far more sustainable, especially if you're also juggling work and family life. If you'd rather skip the effort altogether, a professional deep clean covers most of this list in a single visit.
