Keys, Access and Security: How Cleaner Visits Work
Whether you're in during your clean or not, access arrangements matter. Here's how key holding typically works and what questions to ask before handing over a key.
The three main ways clients handle access
Most households fall into one of three patterns: being home for the visit and letting the cleaner in directly, leaving a key with a neighbour or in a lockbox, or arranging for the cleaning company to hold a key on file between visits. Each works fine — the right choice usually comes down to your work pattern and how comfortable you are with the arrangement.
Working households across Hull, Hessle and Willerby often prefer key holding precisely because it means the clean can happen during the day while they're out, rather than needing to be home or arrange cover every single visit. It's one of the most requested arrangements for regular weekly or fortnightly bookings.
What a reputable company should do with your key
If you're handing over a key, it's reasonable to expect it to be labelled with a code rather than your address, stored securely off-site rather than left in a van, and logged against your booking so there's a clear record of who has access and why. Ask directly how a company stores keys — a proper answer should come without hesitation.
- Ask whether keys are labelled with your name/address or an anonymous code
- Ask where keys are stored between visits and who has access to them
- Confirm what happens to your key if you cancel or switch cleaners
- Check whether the same cleaner attends each visit, and how substitutions are handled
Lockboxes and smart locks
For holiday lets and Airbnb-style properties in particular, a coded lockbox or smart lock is often more practical than physical key handovers, especially with multiple cleaners or contractors needing access on different days. If you're using a smart lock, it's worth generating a time-limited code for each visit rather than a permanent one, so you retain full control over exactly when access is possible.
For regular domestic clients, a lockbox fixed discreetly near the property can also work well, avoiding the need to be home or to coordinate with neighbours, while keeping a physical backup in case of app or battery issues with smart locks.
Being home versus being out
There's no right answer here — plenty of clients prefer to be home, particularly for a first visit, so they can point out priorities and get a feel for how their cleaner works. Others prefer to be out entirely so the clean isn't interrupted and the household routine carries on as normal. Most cleaning companies, including us, are happy to work either way.
Pets, alarms and other practicalities
If access involves an alarm system, it's worth agreeing in advance exactly how it should be handled, including a backup contact number in case of false alarms. The same goes for pets — let your cleaner know in advance if a dog will be home, and agree whether it should be crated, in the garden, or roaming free, so there are no surprises for anyone on the day.
